National Trust - Tattershall Castle: A medieval brick castle with royal history

Tattershall Castle is an impressive medieval castle in Lincolnshire, England. It is one of the most significant surviving brick castles in the country and is an outstanding example of 15th-century architecture. Today, the castle is managed by the National Trust and attracts visitors with its fascinating history, imposing architecture, and picturesque surroundings.

Historical Background
The origins of Tattershall Castle date back to the 13th century when the first castle was built on this site by Robert de Tattershall. It was originally constructed of wood and later rebuilt in stone. In the 15th century, the castle was extensively renovated by Ralph Cromwell, the 3rd Baron Cromwell, and acquired its distinctive brick structure. Cromwell, the Treasurer of King Henry VI, built the castle as a representative residence to showcase his wealth and power.

After Cromwell's death, the castle changed ownership several times and fell into disrepair over the centuries. During the English Civil War in the 17th century, Tattershall Castle was partially destroyed. In the 19th century, the building was saved from demolition when wealthy art collector Lord Curzon purchased and restored it. He ensured the preservation of the castle and later bequeathed it to the National Trust, which continues to care for it to this day.

Architecture and Special Features
Tattershall Castle is a unique example of the use of brick in medieval castle architecture. While many castles in England were constructed of limestone or sandstone, Tattershall was built from millions of handmade bricks, giving it a distinctive appearance.

Key architectural highlights of the castle include:
- The impressive Great Tower - The centerpiece of the castle, a six-story residential tower with magnificent fireplaces, original stonework, and a spectacular rooftop terrace.
- The massive spiral staircase - One of the largest and best-preserved spiral staircases of the medieval period in England.
- The elaborate fireplaces - Particularly striking are the intricately decorated fireplaces reflecting Cromwell's wealth.
- The battlements and defensive structures - The height of the castle and its sturdy walls attest to its former strategic importance.

From the rooftop terrace of the Great Tower, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding Lincolnshire landscape.

The Surroundings of Tattershall Castle
The castle is set in a charming landscape with manicured gardens and a moat that once served as a defense. Nearby attractions include:
- Tattershall Church - A Gothic church with impressive stained glass windows and historical connections to the castle.
- Tattershall Lakes - A picturesque nature area with lakes, ideal for walks and boat rides.
- The ruins of the medieval outer bailey - The remains of the former fortifications.

Visitor Experience
Tattershall Castle offers a variety of experiences for history enthusiasts and families:
- Guided tours and exhibitions - The history of the castle and its residents comes to life through informative tours.
- Interactive activities - Visitors can explore medieval armor and weapons or participate in archery exercises.
- Seasonal events - Historical reenactments, medieval markets, and themed festivals bring the past to life.

Significance for Cultural Heritage
Tattershall Castle is not only an architectural masterpiece but also a significant monument to medieval England. Its preservation by the National Trust ensures that this impressive structure will be safeguarded for future generations.

Conclusion
Tattershall Castle is an exceptional medieval castle that captivates visitors with its distinctive brick architecture, rich history, and impressive views. Visitors can immerse themselves in the world of the 15th century, admire the stunning architecture, and learn more about medieval life. A visit is worthwhile for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike who wish to explore the picturesque surroundings.

Castle is lovely and views are brilliant, can see so far and went on such a lovely day. Parking available. The only downside is not much else to do. Not that that is a major issue as it’s nice to just take in the view!

A nice scenic outside area, a spiral staircase that leads different rooms and an amazing view from the top. Tattershall castle is well worth the visit if you're staying around the area.

Another lovely National Trust property worth visiting. Such a lot of stairs to get up to the top, when you do reach the top, you get such lovely views across Lincolnshire. Definitely worth all the stairs.

A very well preserved red brick keep. This castle would of looked amazing when it was complete. I sometimes wish I had a time machine just so I could visit some of these historic places. The sights and sounds this place would of witnessed. The stairs are a fun challenge, we managed to go to the top with our 3 year old going step step step for 150 odd steps.....then jump jump jump all the way down. It has a good variety of graffiti also on the stairs. From 18th century to "Dan woz ere 21" it's a good example of just how illiterate and lacklust our writing has become. I drove down the wrong lane to the carpark though and ended up outside the doors to the church. Use the left lane not the lane straight in front. The church is also well worth a visit. It's full of gorgeous architecture and a beautiful vaulted wooden ceiling. We didn't explore all the castle and grounds as we was short on time but we will definitely come back. . .I recommend becoming a national trust member so you can visit this place and others as many times as you want.

We are NR members and have visited many NT properties, we felt that Tattershall Castle needs some TLC. The signage is very poor, the information and presentation were extremely poor. This is a real shame as it has the potential to be very special

We liked, because it's not squish with lot of people's, very nice and peacefully can spend time , big , interesting rooms with few furnitures. History from the basement till top of the castle , there is lovely view all around the castle 🏰. Enough places in the car park and clean toilets .

Went on a Sunday. Lots of parking. The description on the website and Word of mouth didn't give us a particularly good impression. However the whole family thought it was absolutely fantastic ! The castle, church and surrounding area are beautiful. The spiral staircase maybe a bit much for some but when you get to the top it has exceptional views and is very rewarding. Definitely on our 'go again' list.

Second visit to this national trust site. Lots of history. Not sure if there was an audio set here but that would have made it even more interesting. Keep a look out for all the graffiti, incredible!

Wow such an amazing building. Visited here at the weekend, and walked right to the top, there is loads of history and some brilliant stories to hear, the sheer size of each floor and the stunning views make this a fantastic place to see. Need to be a National Trust member or pay the NT entry fee

Wish there were a few more exhibits from past centuries, ie furniture, furnishings, perhaps cooking utensils or the like. It would give a better representation of life in the times of occupation.

Visited here after staying nearby. The castle is impressive. Although there isn't a lot to do once you're there, apart from admiring the views from the battlements. The church next to the castle is just as interesting and is free.
